KMD as a record label formed as part of a natural progression
towards more hands-on music management by already well-respected
and successful music distribution company Kurse Music Distribution.
In collaboration with High-Voltage Entertainment, KMD re-released
female hip-hop act Godessa’s first full-length album,
Spillage in late 2004 with resounding success and was instrumental
in the production and distribution of the hugely popular video
for the track Mindz Ablaze.
Early 2005 once again heralded success for KMD with the release
of South Africa’s most famous DJ, DJ Ready D’s first
solo album, Not For Tha Faint Hearted. KMD launched this cd
in style and with much flair at the Dragon Power Fitness Centre
in early March. The launch featured KMD artists including the
‘original social worker’, Teba, whose album Manifesto
was released a few months afterwards.
Also released in 2005 was the latest album from electronica
artist Felix Laband, once again in collaboration with Open Record.
KMD currently has several projects in the pipeline for 2006,
including the debut album from hip-hop act Jitsvinger, well-known
outfit Brasse Vannie Kaap (BVK) as well as an Afrikaans/hip-hop
compilation featuring South Africa’s biggest and most
talented artists.
KMD is commited to forging an alliance with the artists we represent,
creating an atmosphere where artists are involved in all aspects
of the music-making business, thereby redefining the accepted
artist-label dynamic. Our aim is to empower our artists to become
business-minded as well as great musicians. We believe that
this approach creates a better and more lasting bond between
artist and label and also facilitates better music-making, thereby
creating the quality product we strive to bring to the South
African public.
